Davao City is a highly urbanized city and the capital of the Davao Region (Region XI). The 2024 census counted 1,848,947 people there. For a retiree it offers four level 3 hospitals, an international airport, and weather with rain spread through the year. It is a long way from Luzon, and the Central Davao Fault System runs through it. Some foreign governments also advise caution about Mindanao, which matters if you hold a second passport or buy insurance abroad.
Weather and storms
PAGASA’s climate map puts the Davao area in climate Type IV: rain “more or less evenly distributed throughout the year”, with no dry season. The Davao City station’s normals for 1991 to 2020:
| Month | Rainfall (mm) | Mean temp (°C) | Month | Rainfall (mm) | Mean temp (°C) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 166.8 | 27.3 | July | 168.6 | 28.1 |
| February | 114.4 | 27.5 | August | 167.4 | 28.2 |
| March | 106.6 | 28.2 | September | 162.0 | 28.3 |
| April | 114.6 | 28.9 | October | 194.8 | 28.5 |
| May | 166.2 | 28.9 | November | 139.7 | 28.3 |
| June | 192.7 | 28.4 | December | 141.7 | 27.9 |

That is 1,835.5 mm a year over about 136 rainy days. Every month gets more than 100 mm, and none gets 200 mm.
Typhoons. PAGASA says typhoons move northwest from the Pacific, “sparing Mindanao from being directly hit by majorty of the typhoons that cross the country” (PAGASA’s spelling). It does not publish a count for Davao City itself. Nationally, its 2023 report gives an average of 8.4 tropical cyclones making landfall a year (1991 to 2020), and says that in 2023 no wind signal was raised over the southern portions of SOCCSKSARGEN and the Davao Region, among other areas.
Hospitals
The DOH’s list of licensed hospitals (as of 30 June 2026) shows four level 3 hospitals in Davao City, out of five in the whole region:
| Hospital | Owner | Authorised beds |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Philippines Medical Center | Government (DOH) | 1,200 |
| Davao Doctors Hospital | Private | 250 |
| San Pedro Hospital of Davao City | Private | 250 |
| Brokenshire Medical Center | Private | 200 |

The fifth, Davao Regional Medical Center, is in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. The same list shows nine private level 2 hospitals in the city. The DOH list also notes extra services by hospital, such as dialysis. Ask the hospital directly about the specialist care you need.
The money side
PSA’s 2025 poverty threshold for Davao del Sur (preliminary, released 26 August 2026) is PHP 33,006 per person a year. That is the province figure the OFW retirement calculator uses. PSA also gives Davao City its own threshold in its table of highly urbanized cities. For 2023, the latest year in PSA’s OpenSTAT database, that was PHP 31,535 for the city, against PHP 30,861 for the rest of Davao del Sur.
PSA put inflation in the Davao Region at 8.7% in September 2026, against 7.2% for the whole country (release of 6 October 2026). PSA also publishes a price index for the city alone: Davao City’s inflation in September 2026 was 6.3%, against 8.7% for the region that month.
| Figure | Davao del Sur or Region XI | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Poverty threshold, per person a year | PHP 33,006 | PSA, 2025 (preliminary) |
| Inflation, September 2026 | 8.7% (national 7.2%) | PSA, released 6 October 2026 |
| Minimum wage, non-agriculture, a day | PHP 540 | NWPC, wage order RB XI-24 |

Wages. Wage order RB XI-24 raised the Davao Region’s daily minimum in two steps. The second took effect on 1 September 2026, bringing non-agriculture work to PHP 540 (NWPC summary of 6 October 2026).
Flights
Francisco Bangoy International Airport is classed as international by CAAP. CAAP counted 4,390,098 passengers there in 2025, of whom 252,649 were on international flights. Those international passengers flew on three airlines: Scoot, Cebu Pacific and Qatar Airways. No official source lists the airport’s current international destinations, so check the airlines’ schedules for your work country.
The honest drawback: earthquakes
The city government says Davao City “is traversed by the Central Davao Fault System”, and it marks fault traces with PHIVOLCS. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake offshore Davao Oriental on 10 October 2025 reached Intensity V in the city, according to PHIVOLCS. Before you buy or build, ask the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office whether the lot sits near a mapped fault.
Travel advisories, too. Several foreign governments advise caution about parts of Mindanao, and they draw the lines differently. As published on 26 October 2026:
- United Kingdom: the FCDO “advises against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao”, with exceptions that do not include Davao City. It also says travel insurance “could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office”.
- Canada: its regional advisory covers “Davao del Sur, excluding Davao City”. The country-wide advice, to “exercise a high degree of caution”, applies to the city.
- Australia: “Reconsider your need to travel to eastern Mindanao”. Check Smartraveller’s map for where Davao City falls.
The US State Department publishes its own advisory. If you hold a second passport, or bought health or travel insurance abroad, read your own government’s advisory and your policy’s wording on advisories before you move.
City rules a newcomer notices
- Smoking and vaping. Ordinance No. 0472-24 (2024) bans smoking and vaping in public places, including “Public Outdoor Spaces”, except in designated smoking areas. The fine is PHP 3,000 plus cessation counselling. It replaced the city’s 2012 anti-smoking ordinance.
- Firecrackers. Ordinance No. 060-02 (2002) makes it unlawful to “manufacture, sell or offer for sale, distribute, possess or use any firecracker or pyrotechnic device” anywhere in the city, at any time. A first offence carries a fine of PHP 1,000, up to one month in jail, or both.

The OFW retirement calculator uses the same PSA threshold as this page.
