At around 40 you have some SSS contributions behind you and about 20 years in front of you before 60. That is still enough to build a pension floor and a second savings stream. The moves differ from the ones at 30:
- Take stock. Count the contributions SSS has posted and find the gaps.
- Put a number on the target. Work out the pension the rules give for your record, then see what more years add.
- Add a top-up beside SSS. The voluntary Pension Booster, an MP2 account or a PERA can run alongside your contributions.
- Write a will for the property SSS rules do not cover, and keep your SSS beneficiary record current.
Take stock first
Open your My.SSS account and list the contributions SSS has posted. Count them toward the 120 you need for a monthly pension (RA 11199 Sec. 12-B), and mark any month that is missing. Do it now, because the window to pay a month is short. Land-based OFWs can pay January to September contributions until 31 December of the same year, and October to December contributions until 31 January of the next year (SSS OFW page). Land-based OFWs are treated like self-employed members (Sec. 9-B(c)), and for them the Act says “no retroactive payment of contributions shall be allowed” except in the cases it sets out (Secs. 11-A and 22-A). If you paid a month and it is not posted, ask SSS to trace it while you still have the receipt.
Then check your Pag-IBIG savings and any MP2 account. If you opened an MP2 account at 30, its five-year term has ended, so ask Pag-IBIG whether it is still earning. Under Pag-IBIG Circular No. 487 (2026), a matured account without the one-time rollover closes, becomes Accounts Payable and stops earning returns.
See the SSS contribution inquiry guide for how to check your posted contributions.
What 20 years of SSS can give
The monthly pension is the highest of three amounts (RA 11199 Sec. 12(a)): PHP 300 plus 20% of your average monthly salary credit (AMSC) plus 2% of the AMSC for each credited year over 10; 40% of the AMSC; or PHP 1,000. The Act also sets minimums by credited years, and adds PHP 1,000 a month on top.
A scenario, worked from the formula. Say that by 60 you have 20 credited years in all and an AMSC of PHP 20,000, the most the formula counts:
- PHP 300 + 20% of 20,000 + 2% of 20,000 x 10 years over 10
- PHP 8,300
- 40% of 20,000
- PHP 8,000
- Monthly pension (the highest of the three)
- PHP 8,300
- Plus the additional PHP 1,000
- PHP 1,000
- Monthly pension before any across-the-board increase
- PHP 9,300
That is PHP 9,300 a month before any across-the-board increase. Each credited year above 20 adds 2% of the AMSC. At this AMSC, five more years add PHP 2,000 a month: 25 credited years give PHP 11,300. So the years you paid before 40 count too.
See the SSS pension calculator to work it out on your own record.

A top-up beside SSS: the voluntary Pension Booster
SSS runs a voluntary savings scheme, the MySSS Pension Booster. Its primer sets the rules:
- You pay from PHP 500 a payment, with “no maximum limit (depending on the SSS-partner collecting agent)”.
- The earnings are tax-free.
- In year 1 you can withdraw only for hardship, which includes repatriation for OFWs.
- In years 2 to 4 you can withdraw part or all of it, with reduced earnings.
- From year 5 you can withdraw part or all of it.
- At the end it pays out as a pension, a lump sum or both, on top of your regular SSS benefit.
See the Pension Booster guide for the full rules.
MP2 and PERA from 40
MP2 runs in five-year terms. One account can roll over once, so it covers at most 10 years; 20 years holds four terms only if you open new accounts. You can have more than one MP2 account (Circular No. 487). Pag-IBIG’s MP2 page says at least 70% of the Fund’s net income goes to dividends. The rates it publishes are past years, not a forecast.
PERA allows tax-free withdrawal from 55, but only after five years of contributions (RA 9505 Secs. 10 and 12). Starting at 40 meets that easily. Starting after 50 does not. The 5% tax credit counts contributions up to PHP 200,000 a year, or PHP 400,000 for overseas Filipinos (BSP PERA FAQ).
See the Pag-IBIG savings guide for the term rules and past dividends.
See the PERA guide for the limits and the tax credit.
Prices in 20 years
The pension figure above is in today’s pesos. In 20 years the same food, medicine and rent will cost more, and your other savings have to cover the difference.
See the OFW retirement calculator to work the gap out for your own costs and place.
See the inflation guide for the latest PSA rate.
A will, and your SSS beneficiaries
A will decides who receives your house, land, savings and other property. It does not decide who receives SSS benefits. The Social Security Act names the beneficiaries: your dependent spouse and children first, then your dependent parents, then a person you designate (Sec. 8(k)). If no beneficiary qualifies, death benefits go to your legal heirs under the law of succession (Sec. 15). The same section says SSS benefits “are not transferable”. Keep your SSS record up to date with your spouse and children, and use the will for everything else. For MP2 and PERA, ask Pag-IBIG and your PERA administrator how they pay out on death.
See the last will guide for how a will is made and kept.
What to keep after this page
Take stock, put a number on the target, add a top-up, and write the will. The figures come from the rules as published on the dates in the sources: the formula, the 120 contributions and the beneficiary rules from RA 11199, the Pension Booster rules from the SSS primer, the MP2 rules from Pag-IBIG, and the PERA rules from RA 9505 and the BSP.
