SSS pays a cash benefit to members who lose their job through no fault of their own. It is half of your average monthly salary credit a month, for up to 2 months. You must be 60 or younger (50 for mineworkers, 55 for racehorse jockeys) and have paid at least 36 monthly contributions, 12 of them in the 18 months before you were separated. You can claim it once every 3 years (RA 11199 Sec. 14-B).
Who qualifies and who does not
The SSS unemployment benefit page covers employees, including kasambahay, and OFWs. These count as involuntary separation:
- installation of labour-saving devices, redundancy, retrenchment or downsizing
- closure or cessation of the business (if only your branch closed, SSS treats it as retrenchment or redundancy)
- illness, where the law bars you from continuing or it puts your co-workers’ health at risk
- resigning because of serious insult, inhuman treatment or a crime by your employer against you or your family, if you can back it up with evidence for DOLE and SSS
- economic downturn, natural or man-made disasters, and similar cases DOLE and SSS accept
These do not count:
- dismissal for just cause: serious misconduct, wilful disobedience, gross and habitual neglect, fraud or breach of trust, a crime, or similar cases such as abandoning your job
- resigning by choice, or the normal end of an employment contract (SSS Circular 2023-012 has the separation confirmed as not being the end of a contract)
- “floating status” while you wait to be recalled, unless your contract expires without recall
- OFWs with a signed contract who were never deployed
Repatriated OFWs
OFWs are covered. SSS confirmed in March 2026 that OFWs who were involuntarily separated can claim, “provided they meet the qualifying conditions and certified by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW)”. DMW, through its offices in the Philippines or the migrant workers office in the country you worked in, decides whether your separation counts as involuntary.
What SSS asks an OFW for:
- the notice of termination from your foreign employer, or
- a notarised affidavit of termination, backed by your employment contract verified by the DMW or labour office abroad, or by proof that you came home, such as the Bureau of Immigration arrival stamp in your passport.
Land-based OFWs do not need their foreign employer to confirm the separation online, which employees in the Philippines do (SSS Circular 2023-012).
If you do not qualify, for example because you have fewer than 36 contributions, the OWWA reintegration programme has separate help for returning OFWs.
How much and how long
The benefit is 50% of your average monthly salary credit (AMSC) each month, for at most 2 months (RA 11199 Sec. 14-B, IRR Rule 27). Your AMSC is the higher of your last 60 monthly salary credits divided by 60, or all your salary credits divided by the number of contributions you paid. SSS works out benefits on salary credits up to PHP 20,000.
- AMSC PHP 12,000: each month (50%)
- PHP 6,000
- AMSC PHP 12,000: for 2 months
- PHP 12,000
- AMSC PHP 20,000 or more: each month
- PHP 10,000
- AMSC PHP 20,000 or more: for 2 months
- PHP 20,000
SSS does not publish a peso maximum. The PHP 20,000 cap on salary credits means the formula cannot go above PHP 10,000 a month.
If you find a new job within the 2 months, SSS deducts what it overpaid. If two SSS benefits fall in the same period, for example sickness and unemployment, only the higher one is paid.
How to apply online
You file the claim in My.SSS within 1 year of the date you were separated. Before you start you need a My.SSS account and either a UMID card enrolled as an ATM card or an approved disbursement account in the Disbursement Account Enrollment Module (DAEM).
- File in My.SSS. Log in, open the Benefits tab and choose Unemployment Benefit. Pick your disbursement account and your employment category (employee, kasambahay, sea-based OFW or land-based OFW), and enter the date you were separated and your employer’s name. Choose the DOLE field office, or the DMW office or labour office abroad, where you will get certified.
- Your employer confirms, if you were employed in the Philippines. It has 7 calendar days to confirm the details online. If it does not, the claim is rejected and you can file again.
- Get certified within 30 calendar days. Bring to the office you chose: the transaction number from SSS’s email, one valid ID with your photo and signature, your notice of termination or notarised affidavit, and a certificate of pending case or police report if one applies. The office certifies within 3 working days of a complete application. If you miss the 30 days, SSS cancels the claim.
- SSS approves once the certification shows in its system. You do not need to bring a printed copy.

Your SSS record does not stop when your job does. You can keep paying as a voluntary member so your contributions keep counting toward a pension. See voluntary SSS contributions. Questions people ask
Who is qualified for SSS unemployment benefits?
Employees, kasambahay and OFWs who lost their job involuntarily, for example through redundancy, retrenchment or closure, and who were 60 or younger at the time (50 for mineworkers, 55 for racehorse jockeys). You need at least 36 monthly contributions, 12 of them in the 18 months before you were separated, and no unemployment benefit paid to you in the 3 years before.
How do I apply for unemployment benefits in SSS?
File the claim in My.SSS under Benefits, then Unemployment Benefit, and choose the DOLE, DMW or overseas labour office where you will get your certification. Within 30 calendar days, take your transaction number, an ID and your notice of termination to that office so it can certify your involuntary separation. SSS approves the claim once the certification comes through.
How many days does it take to get the SSS unemployment benefit?
The 2026 SSS Citizen's Charter gives 3 working days to process the claim. Before that, your former employer has 7 calendar days to confirm your separation online (land-based OFWs skip this step), and the DOLE or DMW office certifies it within 3 working days of getting your complete documents. Payment then goes to your enrolled disbursement account.
Can I apply for SSS unemployment benefit if I resigned?
Only for the resignations SSS lists, under Article 300 of the Labor Code: serious insult by the employer or its representative on your honour and person, inhuman and unbearable treatment, a crime by the employer or its representative against you or your immediate family, and causes analogous to these. SSS says the employee 'shall support the ground/s for immediate resignation with substantial evidence as may be required by the DOLE and SSS.'
